The ultimate DPO

Here's how the story goes. A customer found a very clean rust free original 74 Midget wit 67,000 miles on it for $2500. He agrees to buy it. The people for what ever reason towed it on a dolly for 15 miles or so. Not a problem if you have some brains. They put it in first and drove it up on the dolly. Tied it down and off they went. The only problem was they left it in first gear. A Midget motor would be turninig over 12,000 RPM at 55 MPH in first. The end results was serious valve float. Damage, one broken rocker, one blown out lifter, and a spun rod bearing. He ended up giving them $1,000 for the car and is going to give me $2,500 to overhaul the engine. Now I don't think that will ever be beat as to the Ultimate DPO.

Ouch!!! That poor little Midget!! Maybe the DPO should be tied to the bumper and dragged 15 miles at 55 MPH!!! I wonder if the tranny survived???

If he's gonna spend 2500, wouldn't it just be easier to spend an extra hundred or so and get a good tranny and not have to pull the engine again?

hard to believe they didnt hear the whine..

You don't pick good 1275 Midget trannys up for a couple of hundred. For one thing finding a good used one is next to imposible, and if you do it could run as much as a good used B OD tranny. A rebuilt one cost $1,000.

A buddy of mine in the Navy pulled his VW behind a UHaul truck from Pascagoula towards Charleston. He stopped in Mobile to investigate the smoke behind him. Yup. 1st gear. No tread left on rear tires. Surprisingly, the only thing the had to do was put new thread inserts for headbolts, and new tires.
