I am about 3/4" the way through The Red Car and am thoroughly enjoying it. What other car related books are available for some good reading?

That's one of my favorites. I just bought it for a friend for Christmas. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Wasn't Christine a red car?

Yep, but that was a '57 Plymouth. This is about a TC and a kid named Hap.

Other good books of the same vintage are any of the "Black Tiger" Series, by Patrick O'Connor.

All of the books, four, by B.S. Levy. fun series.

I got an original copy of Combat about a year ago, and a signed letter from the author. I haven't read it yet but I plan to soon. I've been looking forward to it for some time! Nothing like the smell of a 75-year-old book and the sound of a warm fire on a cold winter night.

I second the "Last Open Road" series by B.S. Levy.
The books therein are:
1. The Last Open Road
2. Montazumas Ferrari
3. The Fabulous Trashwagon
4. Tolys Ghost
#5 will be released next fall getting the saga of Buddy Palumbo from it's start in '52 up into the 60s and the GT40 crew(right from Burts mouth)

Those all sound great and I will be looking to add them to my collections. Any more books like The Red Car that are specifically about the MG?

Vinnie - send it to me when you finish..I've still not read it!

Now THAT's great news, Steve!!

...one day we may sit and quaff, and I'll tell ya just how a rented Chrysler product REALLY reacts to bein' stuff'd into reverse at speed.

...somewheres in "upstate New York." /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Great thread - got me to thinking. this isn't a thread hijack, just along the same lines. I teach a class every semester that deals with visual development. I pick a book, the students read it, and all of the illustrations for the semester are based on that story. We treat it as if the story is going to be made into a movie - they develop the look characters - environments - etc. This thread made me realized that I have never picked a story that was car related. It would be cool to do a period adventure around cars - any suggestions.

All the while reading it I pictured what The Red Car would be like on the big screen. I'd go see it. I a first pressing of the hardcover from Amazon.

I first read The Red Car is 1956, and it is one of the reasons, I went down the road of LBC's versus American Iron. As in the book, they would take me on a long straight, but get on a twisty back road, no contest. Growing up by Watkins Glen also supported my appreciation of " sports cars of the 60's ". I still reread The Red Car every couple of years. It's a great book.

Ditto.

But more like '62 for me. I bought through The Weekly Reader Program in 6th grade. The Glen was about 6 hours from me so my first trip there was in '68 (in a '58 VW I rolled two weeks later).

The Red Car is available used on eBay and (I think) B&N and Amazon.

Yep. Bought my copy from Scholastic Books in sixth grade in Corpus Christi - 1961. The guy who lived next door to us was a mechanic and wrenched for a driver who had an Alfa Giulietta and raced at an old air strip (I think). I got to tag along a few times and got burnt oil and rubber in my system.

I lost my copy of the book long ago, and several years back, I located one from Amazon. Did the same with The Black Tiger , another that I read way back when. There are several in the series - one placed at Le Mans, one at the Mexican Road Race, and another at Indy, as I recall. Read all of them, and may try to find those as well.

The other Scolastic Books one I got ahold of early (4th grade IIRC) was:"The Red, Red Roadster". Alfa driven by either a teacher or a librarian, can't recall exactly. I knew about LBC's then as me Ol' Fella's pals had 'em, but hadn't heard of an Alfa Romeo before that.

Wonder if that had anything to do with my "duality issues"?!?! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif
