What an interesting show!

Last night on PBS we saw this documentary on the Nazi censorship of art in the museums of Europe.

Of course, the "best" of the art was to go to Hitler's completely re-designed city of Linz:

And what was left was to go to the Nazi elite.
 
That was a facinating and well-done production, uncovering minute facts that most folks never considered about the Nazi occupation and confiscation of property.

A most interest fact was that the vast majority of the artwork has never been recovered, probably still in the hands of black market dealers.

The provenance of some of those paintings would make excellent plots for Hollywood movies, no doubt.

If you like european history and WWII adventure and intrigue, watch this show!
 
I watched it last night, excellent documentary!

We lost so much cultural history of Europe during this time period, like when the German troops destroyed an historic bridge in Florence, just for spite... Never to be seen again

Incredible how the German troops were told to actually target cultural history...

Not so amazing I'm afraid, when you consider that what they targeted for destruction was NON-German cultural history. The decadent "art" produced by the "lower races".

Some of that documentary's scenes of "acceptable" art are also amazing. If it carried the "Nazi seal of approval" it was likely militaristic or racist garbage.
