The old Stromberg vs SU song and dance....

I am seriously considering replacing the CD175s on my TR250 (the rare C3150) with SU HS-6s. Maybe even three of them. Being one of the SU Faithful I prefer the simplicity of the SU.
However, I also happen to have a pair of the older style CD175s as found on the TR-4A. In many ways this carb appears to be superior, as regards the home mechanic, to both the SU and the later emissions models.
First, I think that the Stromberg does have a better float setup and is less prone to heat sink and harmonic vibrations that can affect the exterior float of the SU. The earlier Stromberg also has a very simple choke, being just that, a bar that flips up and decreases the venturi area, as opposed to the potentially leaky exterior, exposed to nature and everything, drop down jet assembly of the SU. Not to mention that the Stromberg also has seals on the throttle shaft, which the HS series do not have. The early CD also has a user friendly knurled knob for simple adjustment of the jet height, as God intended mixture adjustments to be made.
So my question is this: has anyone ever retro fit this earlier series CD to a later 6 cyliner engine?. In triplicate even?

Call Gary Martin at (605) 484-8081. Gary is a wizard at rebuilding Strombergs, his specialty is making them over into concours condition. He can also find you a third matching carb. Sounds like this would work well on a GoodParts triple intake.

Andy, the old Stromberg should be the ticket, but you may have to change needles to get a better mixture at all speeds. I have set up both systems on TR6's with good results, but the Stromberg was so much easier as you have to redo the float bowls to hang level on the SU's. When you get finished get your distributor blueprinted, you can leave the valcuums hooked up for show. Wayne
 
Well, my '67 GT6 came stock with two of that type on it, although they're 150's.
I like the starter bar as an enrichment device. It not only decreases the venturi area, it also slightly raises the needle in the jet.

Forgive my ignorance, How or why would you blueprint a distributor? What about cost?

Andy, I'm running Stromberg 175's on my TR4, having changed from SU's. The TR4 and TR4A Strombergs are much simpler than the 175 CD's on the TR6. I have a manual choke and I've always felt that the Strombergs are easier to adjust and have seen no difference in performance. That said, I'm not sure if the older Strombergs will work with your linkage and choke set up. Mike

Thanks for the feedback guys. Regarding some of the issues raised I think the needle might be interchangable as according to my Haynes carb manual they are in the same series (i.e. 2H, B2Y). Linkage and choke are probably no worse to resolve than with a swap to SUs, but they probably require some fiddling, especially if I go the tri-carb route.
