Well, the spectre of rain has caused me to get a vynl top for my BN-2. I have the original top that will be a help in installing the new one, but since I've not done one before I thought it prudent to ask if anyone (Randy?)might have a tip or two to share. Going to a pro is not going to happen. Any and all advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Take a good look at the details of how the original top is attached at the header.

Chances are, your original wooden header will need to be replaced; if the wood isn't rotted, the screws will be rusted in the inserts (2 @ each end) and the rest will probably just twist the heads off.

I bought the header (recently) from Moss, but to do it again, I'd try to find one that fits better. Live and learn.

If your top attaches to the header like mine (tacks) try to keep them as low as possible, as I didn't get a couple of them low enough, and show if you look close enough. A magnetic tack hammer is indispensable for this.

Beyond that, all I can add is that you have patience; if the job gets to you, just walk away and come back to it later. You don't want to take on this task with an attitude /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

If you have some specific questions along the way, I may be able to recall how I got past that point, so ask away.
 
Thanks Randy. Step number three on almost anything I seem to do on the Healey, is to walk away and think about it. Good advice. Yes, my header is not in the best of shape. I was thinking of using it with some epoxy refinishing, I will make one instead because of the reasons you point out, but I always run into trouble when I try to cut wood with my torch....

An addition to this topic is how to stop the leak of air/water between the wind screen chrome and the hood wooden bow. I've been using a weather strip foam with double side tape. I cannot get the vinyl-covered metal to lay in tight enough to compress the tube like beading. I think it is due to the contour of the wooden bow.
