The New MG: Would Ya?

Just wondering, if MG Rover were to start importing the MGTF or the Midget, who would actually rush out and put their money down, or at least plan on getting one next time they needed a new car? Also, would you replace for your current LBC for it or run it in addition?

not in a million years. a good part of the attraction for me is the classic simplicity of the LBC. Might as well get a Miata

I'd be interested in the TF but not as a replacement for my Spit. I probably wouldn't want the Midget with TATA build quality and fwd - blah.

What I'd really like is a 1st generation Elise.

ME! ME! ME!

Having spent some time behind the wheel of an MGF on one of my trips to the UK, I'm trying desperately to figure out a way to import a new MG TF "kit car" from Mexico....just gotta find somebody to remove the engine & tranny & sell to a Gringo...&, gotta get up the guts to part with 30 big ones in case it held up on the border....

I agree with Chuck - up to a point anyway. Taking the simplicity and the "ability to work on" factors away I would strongly consider a TF but given a choice between the two I'd probably take a new-style Miata based on looks.

If I won a new Midget in a lottery I'd probably keep it, but I wouldn't waste money on it. It is to me by far the worst looking machine ever to wear an MG badge (Metro and Maestro included I think).

do you remember the early 60's Magnettes, Scott? there's an ugly MG

I really don't have that great an interest in it. If I wanted to spend $30-40,000 on a two seater there are quite a few cars to compare it to. The attraction of the old MG's is the fun of owning and driving a vintage British sports car. These cars cannot be replicated. CHEAP FUN!

I'm never giving up my 66B. If I had the money, anything is possible as far as one of the new MGs goes, but I'm not really i the market for a new car of any kind...

Ever seen the MG badged TR7 based concept?

Yup, those included too. The shape and style of the new Midget is unique, beyond that it has nothing going for it in my book.

NOPE! If you can find anything on it pass it along.

I wouldn’t be interested in either of them. IMHO the last “COOL” looking model to sport the Marque was the MG RV8. If something like that was made available to the US market (feasible or not) I’d do all I could to sang one. However I’d never give up my B unless it was for a better one.

The concept car mock-up is hideous, the rebadged TR7 isn't so bad, just a TR7 really.

There is a concept one like that mock-up but with round head lights laid out flat (ala Porsche 928) that looks even worse. I can't seem to find a picture on the internet.

In response to Steve's original question about buying a new MG:

Probably not. I already have two Spridgets and a new Miata....I'm all set thanks!

If I had a zillion bucks, I'd find it difficult to improve on my little collection.

I *really* wish someone would build a new roadster that was not too gimmicky or "modern"...and very simple. I'm not against engine electronics, fuel injection, etc.....but an interior and "luxuries" at the Bugeye-level would be neat. The BMW Z1 was a nice little item...but we can see how far astray they've gone with the new Z4

I like the new Midget better than the "F", but I agree with Scott....it's *not* a looker!

My non-Miata choice for a nice new simple roadster is the little 3 cylinder Suzuki roadster (same basic engine as Geo Metro!)...sadly, unavailable in North America.

OK....you can go back to "? for Basil" now!

If I had unlimited money, I'd try to duplicate Tony Barnhill's collection, rather than buy new one's

coolest roadster out there is the Smart roadster with its turbocharged 3-cylinder. That thing isn't fast but it looks totally awesome!

If I had all the money in the world to spend on a new car it would not be spent on a MG F or TF or any other modern car. To me, they are all just plain ugly and even worse, they all look just like Jap. cars. I cannot understand what people see in them. I can tolorate the Miata until I look under the hood. Give me an old car any day!
