Last week I installed one fo the new 2 piece spin on oil filter adapters. So far it works like a charm. No leaks. On the new design the center, where the bolt passes through and the smaller diameter gasket is located, there is a floating plate. The plate is spring loaded by a coil spring surrounding the bolt in the housing. The plate is machined to accept the smaller gasket, which is wider than the old style gasket. There is a small threaded keeper on the engine side of this plate to hold the assembly together during installation. The instructions say this design allows for proper sealing where there are variations in the location of the small gasket in relation to the large gasket.
I believe the problem I had with my one piece adapter were caused by the center of the adapter hitting it's mating surface on the engine block before the large sealing ring was sufficiently compressed. The new design allows the large gasket to seal with the bolt pressure and the inner gasket to seal with the pressure from the coil spring.
Sorry, I was so anxious to install the adapter that I did not take pictures.
If you have problems with your one piece adapter leaking. Try the new design. BTW mine came from BPNW
