I struck up a bit of an acquaintance with Tuck, who plays John in the Japanese Beatles Tribute band "The Mendips". We have exchanged emails because we both have similar John Lennon Rickenbackers and Vox AC-30 amps. He's a really nice guy and he even sent me a VHS tape full of their performances (at no charge).

I just found this clip while surfing around You Tube and thought I'd share. They may not look a lot like the Beatles, but wait until about 6:55 into the video and listen to their rendition of "You Can't Do That." All of their performances are very technically accurate.

Spooky, indeed! Musically, just about dead-on.

I met Tuck through a Guitar forum we both participated in. We both have similar Beatles "gear." I had no idea at first that he was in a tribute band, but he eventually sent me a tape with about an hour's worth of really great Beatles music he and his group have done. Most of the songs they do are every bit as good, in some cases better, as some of the US-based Beatles bands, such as "1964 The Tribute." What is amazing is that all of these fellows have Japanese as their first language, yet they do such a masterful job imitating a decidedly British sound!

I've heard a clip by the Mendips, they're pretty good. What's most interesting is performing with period instruments and amplification. IMHO, the old tube-type amps are superior to modern sound systems, no doubt about it.

I never heard Vox amps in person, but I did hear Marshalls on a few occasions. NOTHING I've ever heard sounded better than those old tube-type Marshalls (also used by Hendrix; Mountain; Led Zepellin, etc.).

Not to hijack your thread, Basil, but a few years back Cream had a reunion and it was broadcast on Public TV. I piped it thrugh my sound system and really enjoyed it. Of course, Jack Bruce's voice ain't what it once was (but pretty good considering he's at least 60), but Clapton and Ginger Baker didn't miss a beat. Just like old times.

On the PBS show, Cream's sound was incredible, clean, clear and LOUD with the old tube-type Marshall amps! I saw at least eight Marshall cabinets on and around the stage, could have been more.

The history of Cream's performances is interesting: they started out with just two Marshalls, and kept increasing them as time went on. In some of their final performances in '67, they had a MOUNTAIN of Marshall amps!

As a result, I'm sure all of Cream have hearing problems!

Oh, to go back to one of their concerts . . . just once. :yesnod:
