.... when checking into my hotel room, especially after breaking my San Diego To Yuma record & a long day dealing with customers and finicky equipment – is old folks sitting around watching tv in *my* room. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif

Now momma was dressed thank god and luckily pops still had on his plaid bermuda shorts black socks and white tennis shoes – but no shirt on drinking a beer. I don’t like to think what I’d of walked into if I’d been a few minutes later checking in. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/sick.gif

Anyway save the shuttering thought of if I’d of show up at a more inopportune moment & having to drag all my stuff back out to the truck and go back up to the front desk to tell them what happed – there really wasn’t any harm done.

Got a free upgrade to a nicer room /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif – but believe you me I banged on the door a few times to avoid any other surprises. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

Now the gal at the front desk checked in with me a little bit ago to apologize again and told me that supposedly the couple didn’t know they where going to stay over another night and forgot to tell the front desk that they weren’t checking out.

I need a beer myself after all that.

I had a similar thing happen when I was coming home from my July trip ti Huntsville, AL. I stopped in Amarillo at a Motel 6 and got a room for the night. The only problem was, my room was occupied (and they did not speak English). Anyway, I did get another room, but we're talking Motel 6 here so the idea of "upgrade" is moot.

OMG! What a beautiful car. Hats off to ya. & at $2500 (used or not) it hardly a rich mans toy. As you & a few others here no doubt know - this is not exactly what you'd call an uncommon of an occurrence.

Myself - I’ve been on both ends of this situation a number of times. But luckily for me I learned early on to always engage the door latch. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Ah, staying in hotels/motels. Just think of all the humanity that has slept in that bed, and their personal hygiene and habits. Would you let them sleep in your bed at home? Kinda makes you not want to sleep on the road.

That said, one of these days, one of these days, I will book a weekend into The Drake in Chi-town.

I've had the room mix-up happen a couple of times. I usually knock, and open the door slowly to peak around the corner before I open it the rest of the way. Not fun when it's been a long day.

Also not fun is when you wake up at 1am and decide you have to go get a drink from the vending machine. A short walk down the hall, no big deal - until you find out they didn't program your keycard right and it expired an hour before. So I have another habit: I usually "unlock" the door with the key before I close the door. That also lets me close the door without making even the hint of a sound.

It's crazy to not use the physical locks when you're in your room anyway. It not only avoids this situation, but prevents thieves from entering as well. One properly coded key will open all rooms in a hotel.

I was once on the other end of that situation. Someone walked into my room after I had checked in . . . I was "on the throne" and had to shout out that the room was occupied! It was a USAF VOQ, so the desk was manned by a young airman who made a minor error.
