Just ran across this video of the Anaconda Smoke Stake that was an icon in Great Falls, where we lived in the mid-late 70's. AS the accompanying article states, you could see this stack from many miles away. It really was an iconic landmark and it's a shame they demolished it. When I was taking flying lessons, I used to fly over the stack just for fun.

Interesting. Near Prescott, Arizona is a stack that is just a tall stack. when the person was trying to get baking for some business project he built the stack and used it in publicity pictures to make peopkle think there was a factory and the place was going concern.
