What's a good product to put on to replace the goop that everyone seems to have inadvertenly scraped oof? Does it really keep the noise down?

I used black silicone caulk on my Spitfire. It seems to be staying on and doing whatever it is supposed to do. As far as keeping the noise down, who really knows.

Truck bedliner? Maybe mix in some oatmeal or sawdust to replicate the original appearance.

Roofing tar? Whatever it is it does seem to kill a lot of the timing chain noise.
