If I remember correctly they show throwing candy out in the 1950 film "The Big Lift" about the Berlin airlift. Been ages since I last saw it.
Hope he was able to enjoy his senior years with no health issues.
The Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation goes around the country flying a C-54 airplane reinacting Candy Bomber drops. I was privileged to attend one such drop and to help host an appearance of another at my local airport through a flying club to which I belong. The plane, the "Spirit of Freedom", is a flying museum. I was also privileged to listen to Col. Gail Halvorsen speak to a group of local school kids by phone while they were attending our event. They (nor I) could believe we were actually speaking with Col. Halvorsen "live" but we were. One of the kids had asked Tim Chopp, the pilot and head of the Foundation a question Tim could not answer. Typical of Tim, he simply pulled out his cell phone, called Col. Halvorsen and put him on speaker. What an experience!
Col. Halvorsen requested in lieu of flowers, people consider making a donation to the Berlin airlift Historical Foundation via their website: www.spiritoffreedom.org.
