The beginning of the end for acting??

Country flag
Offline
Saw an interesting story last night, first registered AI generated actress. Supposed to be about 20yo, sounded like a British accent. Video showing "her" driving a car, dancing and talking to folks. As the technology matures I'm sure it'll get even more realistic. Will it eventually eliminate acting for TV and movies, things that are not live action in front of us?? Would save studios lots of money if those things transitioned to computer generated, and will most care if the characters are real or not?? Will be interesting to see over the next few years, but I think the actors guild has only maybe delayed the inevitable.

Sad thing: Millions (billions?) are so addicted to their smartphone notifications and quickie videos, this AI "actor" thing will get even more views, likes, and "forward to all your contacts".

I asked some young co-workers about how AI is gradually replacing human jobs (particularly entry-level) and personal interactions. Reply: "So what? Who cares? It's fun! Check out this nude couple playing chess! Spicy!"

No kidding - I'd bet most of us have seen that more than we want to admit. Porn for anyone with a smartphone - regardless of age, 24/7 entertainment, cute cat videos, and titillation are replacing the real world around us.

(can you tell I'm just a bit angry at what we're turning into ...?)

I have to admit I have my phone around all the time. However, unless I get a call or need to make one, or get a text I need to reply to, It's on the table or in my pocket. I have no desire to play games, watch TikTok/Youtube or do other stuff with it. Didn't grow up with it, have better uses for my time.

I'm simply hopeful that we'll come to our senses... AND SOON!

It's a Brave new World out there.

Unless the world decides to object, it'll all come down to the fact that those running studios will be able to make shows and movies faster, and most importantly cheaper. Imaging no need to go to other locations, have 100s of behind the scenes folks, stages, props and so on. Just outlines of what they want to see, generate away and in a few hours to a few day, got a show/movie to review. Don't like the star?? Make him/her 2 inches taller and redhead. Change from downtown LA to New York and have aliens blow up a building. And on and on. Then the folks at the top reward themselves for saving a bunch of money by giving themselves big ole bonuses.

Mike - people don't voice objection if they're happy. They just seek more and more of what makes them happy. Give them what makes them happy, and they'll blindly accept everything else.

Google "soma brave new world"

It's happening all around us, mostly on smartphones.

I am cautiously optimistic. I remember when synthesizers came out and everyone predicted the end of Rock & Roll (Remember Queen had 'no synthesizers! on their album covers.) Likewise I doubt you will even remember the movie Sky King and the World of Tomorrow (2004) - the first movie made entirely with CGI, Again the world predicted the end of conventional movies.

I can imagine AI commercials and AI extras and backgrounds but I suspect, much like self driving cars, people will prefer to watch a real actor and and a real story by a real person.

There will be attempts for sure and I have a friend who is a screenwriter who is freaking out - partly becuase of AI - but more frankly because of the amount of union busting so I am not saying it isn't dire but I suspect people will want 'real' as well.

still

Could be it amounts to not much. I do wonder with the younger folks, phone apps and things already with so many not real characters. Plus there's so much with streaming that recognizing faces and knowing they're physically real is tough. Will be interesting to see what the next few years will bring.

Mike - good point. And if the video/movie/whatever is viewed on a small screen, who'd ever know if something is AI?

Nowadays, you can use AI to put anyone's face on any character you want, doing anything you want. And hardly anyone would notice, especially on a small screen.

Saw an interesting one just this morning. A certain past president was shown covering his mouth over and over. I noticed when he "did" that, the sleeve of his suit was a different color from the rest of the suit, and the hand was a different skin tone from the other hand.

yeesh - and that fake video has already appeared on millions of social media feeds.

When will we see the AI Actor's Guild? What demands will there be coming from AI characters?

"More PIXELS!!"

"Better BACKGROUNDS!"

"Roger Rabbit is a FAKE!"

"Mel Brooks is a HUMANIST SWINE!"

"Roger Rabbit is a FAKE!"
But Jessica Rabbit ain't! :bananawave:

Right now AI is "only starting" developmentally. As I type this it is getting better, faster, "smarter" than it was before. Why does that sound familiar?? :D Seriously though, if it's eye opening now, just imagine things a year from now, or even 6 or 3 months. 😲

Yea, it'll do some amazing things I think, as well as some disturbing things eventually. Besides movies/tv there will be music and we're already seeing AI doing customer service online and phone for places. There are estimates of 300m jobs transitioning to it over time, most would be developed world.

One thing, being able to trust what you see, if you weren't physically there, are you sure what you see is true or false??...

customer service? I thought it was customer disservice.
