The 70 Won't Go In Forth Gear !

Forth gear in the 70 acts like it has a wedge pushing the shift lever over to the left when going from third to fourth. I know this isn't right, but what could cause it to do this. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif Also, Is a 72 tranny the same as a 70? I hope so, as I have a good one on the shelf. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif PJ

Sounds like a selector fork to me. Has it been like this for a while? And did it come on gradually or happen overnight as it were? I believe that the '70 and '72 trannys are identical.

Yep, they're the same.

Has to be selector fork sliped.

If 'someone' has the shift lever plate off 120 degrees or used other than the correct spacing bolts with the correct 'thackeray' (sp?) washers then it could be your problem .If the symptom just happened suddenly then I don't have a clue.

Thanks guys! The 72 tranny comes off the shelf. When I get around to it, I'll open up the 70 tranny and see what kind of a mess is lurking inside. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gifPJ

No mess, think only one bolt allowed the selector fork to slip. It is held on with a bolt and a lock nut.

I see what you mean Jack. I looked at an exploded view of the transmission and it looks like the problem might be solved through the side plate opening, which should be fairly easy. Of course, that might not be the only problem. I've had antique car transmissions apart and rebuilt them, so thier not a stranger to me, but to be safe, I wouldn't go that far with this one without rebuild spec sheets of the entire works. Any idea where I can get them? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif Thanks, PJ

Closest thing you will find is a repair manual i'm afraid. Heck just dive right in. And yes those bolts can be seen from the side cover.
