General TR That Front Fan Dog Bolt Again--Torque It

I just put my oil pan back on (again) trying to finish my rebuild, and I realize now that I won't be able to block the crank to torque that front pulley/fan dog bolt. I suppose I could make something to hold the flywheel or the rear crank flange before attaching the flywheel, but what do most people do to tighten that bolt. I'm reluctant to install in the car and put the car in gear to block the wheels, but I'm open to suggestions. I seem to recall a trick of pushing rope into the cylinders. Any advice appreciated. thx

If you put rope in a cylinder, make sure it is almost TDC compression stroke (or the rockers are off). You don't want to bend a valve. In gear with the handbrake on is fine. In gear with a stout screwdriver in the U-join yoke is fine.

I always block the crank with a block of wood...but that's not an option at your stage. It takes a lot of torque, so I would also be reluctant to use the rope trick.

At your point I would lean towards just waiting until it's in the car and use the drivetrain to hold it still. With my memory I'd leave a twisty note on the extension so I won't forget!

This is how I did it on my TR6.....

I made a very simple tool to do the job. Bolt the three screws to the flange, then lever or hold the arm and torque the bolt. Don't know where you live in AZ I live in the east valley you're welcome to borrow it.

Do you mean that you bolt that to your rear transmission flange? I'm in Tucson with Geo, and TR expert in these parts. But I can make one of those if you mean the transmission flange.

Yeah, looks like it is for the flange since the bolt holes there form a rectangle rather than a square. I've used the rope method but have to agree that affixing something like that to the output flange is more elegant.

Bolt it to the fan hub extension, then install the long bolt. You wont be able to get the socket all the way on the bolt because it will bottom on the tool but that is no problem.
