Unless you're going down there with Red Cross or other national services, probably the best way to help is making a contribution to an organization serving down there.

I'm curious - weren't they told to evacuate ahead of time?
I'm wondering how many of those who had to be rescued ignored the orders.
If so,they could have saved the emergency workers a lot of work.

I was listening to NPR this morning and apparently the reason they did not evacuate was because of the botched evacuation during Rita.

We have a sportswriter in St Louis that came from Houston. He said during the evacuation for Rita a 90 minutes drive to a town north of Houston took 16 hours. Too many people and too few roads.

Just heard the rain fall has surpassed the record of more than 49 inches for a topical storm

Budweiser has halted beer production and is canning safe drinking water for Texas.

OK, I have to say it - will anyone notice a difference?

JP, you beat me to it. Have you heard the one about the CEOs of Budweiser, Coors, Miller, and Guinness going out to get a drink? Each one of the first three bought their own products, the CEO of Guinness orders a water. The others ask: aren't you ordering a beer? To which he responds: Since none of you are drinking I didn't think I would.

Seriously though they are in for a long recovery period in Houston and they are going to need all the help they can get. I have heard that the National Guard is getting ready mobilize units from across the country to the Houston area.

Looks like they may need the National Guard to fend off the looters. Orders should be "shoot on sight."

Harvey's rains may be coming to CT this weekend - just in time for the Lime Rock vintage races. I was planning to go Saturday. We'll see...

My aunt and uncle have a home in Rockport. They got out and stayed with one of their daughters in Houston on some of the little higher ground. We have seen some pictures of their home taken from the back. Very fortunate they are. There is considerable damage but no where close to the devastation many others have had.
I wonder how the ones that simply did not have the cash to get out will survive.
