The sensor is broken off in the engine (1960 Mercedes).

Is there such a critter as an add-on temp gauge? A device to monitor the engine coolant temp that doesn't use the original sensor unit? with readout on the dash?

Something like this:

PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE PICTURE ON THE UPPER LEFT OF THAT PAGE!!!!

Thanks.

My first question is why not remove the old sender and replace it?

To get actual coolant temperature, you need a probe that is in contact with the coolant. That generally means adding a hole someplace, which is typically pretty easy. Just drill & tap to a suitable size, some place that will reach into the water jacket, like maybe the water pump housing (away from the impeller of course), or bypass line. Sometimes you can add a tee to an existing fitting, like perhaps the heater line, but make sure it is close to where the coolant always circulates or you'll get a false reading when the heater is off.

Or to get surface temperature, there are a variety of "cylinder head" temperature gauges available.

Tom, all I saw on that site was a girl in a bikini, was there something else on there? Why can you not get the old one out of the engine?

they make a coupler for coolant lines with a bung in it I think

But I also ask the above question

Success! Using a 50/50 mixture of ATF and acetone, I was able to get the old sensor out of the block. Hallelujah.

Back to (relative) normal.

Thanks for the suggestions.
