temp check

I just bought a laser directed temp gague form Harbor Fraight on sale for $35.00 from $80.00. Very cool but I'm not sure where on the engine to aim it to check the temp. I've been suspicious the cars gauge is off.

I would think aiming it at the temperature probe would give you the closest comparison for the gauge.

HI TH, Greg's response is correct. However, the hotest spot on the engine should show up at the rear of the block.----Fwiw--Keoke

There were some variations form the front to the back of the block and well as to the head.
I will bring this to the Tahoe meet in June for anyone who want to check the block temp. It takes two seconds. Anyone out there going? As always I have an open invitation to use any tools I have available to those who get in trouble. Just find me in the white BJ8 with the black bra.

And just how will we know you're wearing a black bra?

I bought one (PepBoys - $50) a couple months ago since the temp gauge in the TR3 I had recently purchased was not working and it might be a while before I could either repair or replace it. At a distance of about 12 to 14 inches the target area is about 1 inch square. I aim it at the metal thermostat housing (I bought the meter with the laser pointer; accurate aiming is easier). You can take a reading off both upper and lower radiator hoses (they do vary), but the hose itself provides insulation. To check the accuracy of the handheld meter I put a pot of water on the stove with an egg in it and brought it to a boil. You need a target in the water as the bottom of the pan is in direct contact with the stove burner and will give a high reading. After a few minutes I got a consistant reading off the egg of 210 degrees...I was satisfied...and ate the egg.
