T-Series td rear guards

I have just purchased a 1953 MG td. It came complete but in many pieces, I have been looking over the parts and am curious to know why some one has welded a piece of flat about 3/4 inch x 20 gauge to the rolled edge of the rear mudguard arch. Is it an upgrade ?, is it because the guards tend to flap a little? It wont be too difficult to remove, and I am wondering is there a mod for this area? Any Ideas? Saltiga

What you've described is how the mudguards are made. The strips are often missing or damaged but extend about 4/5ths of the length of the rolled edge and attached with short weld beads. Hope that helps.

Is this what your speaking about? They keep the splash from washing around the fender and direct water down to the rear. They are tack welded on about every 6 to 8 inches. PJ

Yes That is the piece I am referring, It looked , the way it is attached to be an after thought or a mod, mine is not as straight as the picture, thanks for the info. saltiga

After years of use they tend not to be nice and straight anymore. Banged about by road debris while driving I'd guess is what bends them up.
