OK guys

It says 12 thou hot for tappet settings, anyone have an idea on what they should be cold. - Just putting finishing touches to the refurbed head installation and it is time to set the tappets. I do intend to check them when hot but could do with a starting gap.

In my experience with the 100-4, there is not enough clearance change between hot & cold to make much difference. I expect the Sixes were likely the same.

There was a period when the valve lash tags on the rocker covers could not agree upon whether the lash settings were for hot or cold.

Edit---
I looked up the "factory settings"
Valve Cover tags - Valve lash
BN1, BN2 - No tag. Shop manual .012 cold
Except with 100M cam. .015 cold.

BN4, BN6, BN7, BT7 - Brass riveted tag. .012 hot.

BJ7, BJ8 - first - Brass riveted tag. .012 hot.
BJ8 - second - Aluminum riveted tag. .012 cold.
BJ8 third - foil stick on. .012 cold.

Twelve thousandths of an inch (.012") _hot_ is fifteen thousandths (.015) _cold_, at least it was when I did back to back checks on an MGB engine (2/3s of the Healey) some years ago.

Those values would be for an OEM camshaft, as most of the aftermarket ones I'm familiar with are .018/.020"

If you do set them at .015 cold and check them hot, please let us know the resulting clearance (I wouldn't want to keep perpetuating a myth /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif )

I never checked them Randy but I set them at 0.013" hot. If you can hear them they be safe just don't let them clack! Some engines want more up to 0.018" never knew why??--Keoke

Thanks for the info

For myself, I was guessing at 13 - 14 thou. I will give it a go at 14 and see what the end result is, as long as she runs, we can get back to the hot setting. Whatever that may be !!?

I have never seen any difference on my 6 or 4 between hot or cold settings. Always 0.12!

Well.

I have just had news from my local Healey specialist, he sets 'em at 12 thou hot or cold and further more does not re-torque the head due to the modern gasket construction. All just as well as they are already set at 12 thou and I do not have the special crows foot spanner to re-torque the nuts partially hidden under the rocker shaft.
