TR2/3/3A Tail pipe finisher [extension]

Has anybody seen a original tail pipe extension? Bill Piggott says a chrome finisher that slips inside the tailpipe was used on the TR2 TR3 cars, and a aluminum finisher on the later TR3A cars and then deleted before the end of the run. TRF has an aluminum one that clips on the outside, and is said to be correct for all cars. Moss sells a chrome plated steel finisher. My car was manufactured in Dec 1956. I don't like the look of either pipe but I need something to extend the tailpipe out past the body of the car to prevent damage to the paint, and exhaust haze buildup.

The main advantage of the aluminum one is that it is easy to beat back into a round shape (a tailpipe expander works well) after encountering a harsh slope or kerb (e.g. leaving some gas stations).

George thanks for the suggestion.

It should be aluminium, but when I was at TRF in 2004, I went around their stockroom looking for parts and the tail pipe extensions were all step-down in diameter. I finally found one that was a straight aluminium tube, but they wouldn't sell that one too me because "We have to keep that one because it's like the original ones".

So I never bought one. I have found one since then but I use a chromed steel straight pipe (tube) for every-day use.

Thanks Don. Is there any chance you could post a picture of the aluminum tube? It should not be to hard to make one. I think you would have to cut a few slats in the back to be able to clamp it to the tailpipe. Do you know the correct length? The book says 8".

Keith - I'll try to attach a photo but if I can't e-mail me at 58tr3a "at" videotron.ca. Change the "at" to @ and I'll e-mail you the sketch.

I vote to keep the pipe extension a little long. It keeps the fumes from coming back into the cab so you smell them.

Don thank you for the picture of the pipe and the clamp. I was not sure about the style clamp.

I bought two chrome extensions (back in the day we used to call them echo cans) for my TR6 from Auto Zone. They look great, but when I first installed them, I made a mistake and clamped them at unequal lengths thinking it would look cool. It did look cool but the exhaust gases soon put a deposit on the shorter one - so - I made them the same length. End of problem.

Hi Keith,

On my `61TR3; I have a chrome ext. that points the exhaust down to the ground. It actually looks pretty good & surely keeps fumes, smoke etc. from getting on the car or inside the car.

I found some more information in the TRA Judging Standards on the tail pipe finisher. " At TS15706, the tail pipe and tail pipe extension was changed. This could be from a chrome finisher tip to a polished aluminum one". My guess would be that the chrome one would be the same style that Don posted with his picture, and held on with the same style clamp. The big 3 vendors tail pipe extension are all the step down style.

Keith, I am pretty sure I have one in my parts bin. Probably at least 20 years old but never been fitted. You want me to dig it out and take a photo?

Cheers

Tush. Please do, that would be fantastic.
