Tail lights/blinkers

Novice Bruce again. Some good news, after almost two years in my restoration of my 66 sprite i fired off the engine and she actually started up and running good. Problem with lights. With no lights on the blinkers work fine, when the lights are on the blinker will not work. I installed regular 1157 bulbs and not sure if they are the right ones. Any suggestions, thanks Bruce

If the signals are on but not blinking, then I'd look for faulty connections. Usually if the bulb is too powerful they blink rapidly. If the signal doesn't turn on at all or is dim, there may be a bad ground connection, likely in the front, since the front marker light and the signal share the same bulb. If it's just not flashing (or VERY slowly), it could be the voltage is dropping, either because the generator isn't putting enough out at idle, bad connections, or because that's as good as it gets. Mine was flashing slowly if the headlights and wipers were on, but upgrading to a heavy duty signal flasher fixed that.

check the ground - I had similar, in part because the car was repainted. they ground to the body through the whole fixture unit.

Also on the 65-67 Spridgets, the signal stalk contacts tend to get corroded and make a weak or bad contact. Do not take it apart, it's too old and the plastic will break.
Spray some CRC or electric contact cleaner in the switch at the contacts or pull a piece of emory or fine sandpaper thru the contacts.
Also check the bullet connectors where the signal switch plugs into the main harness under the dash. Clean those bullets.
