Tachometer Testing

Hi Everyone!

I have a fairly simple question. How would I go about testing the tachometer on my 1976 MGB? Since I have owned the car, it has not worked. I've looked at the wiring diagram, and it appears to be hooked up correctly. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks!

Maybe it helps to specify which type you have since there are quite some differences between the different systems out there.
 
It's a Smith's tach, electronic. I think it's the original tachometer from 1976. I've heard that for a mechanical tachometer, you can use an electric drill to test it. I was just wondering if there is a similar type of test for an electrial tachometer.
