Tachometer repair

The tachometer in my 69 TR6 is not working. The needle just jumps around when the engine is running. The tach cable does not seem to be the problem. Does anyone know of a good repair shop? Any idea of the cost to repair/calibrate these? In general is it worth repairing these, or am I better off to just get another used one?
Thanks, Kevin

try nisonger.
or gaugeguys.com
in your case gaugeguys are closer...

When you try to search for "guageguys" you will be directed to some sites other than what they may have intended, so look for APT Instruments. Or go here: https://www.gaugeguys.com/

I have had good luck with Nisonger, that is all I can say.

Kevin- Ever thought of checking it out yourself?
don

At the price it costs for repair (starting price is $165 at Guageguys) I am now inspired to take a shot. I have a later model tach gauge that does work. I am going to try and figure out what is wrong by comparing to my other gauge, and if I can't figure it out, I am going to try swapping pieces (face plate, ouside ring,...). I'll let you know what happens.

If you're going to work on the gauge yourself, do a google search for Anthony Rhode's 27 page PDF on Smiths & Jaeger speedometer repair. The mechanical tachs are basically speedometers without the odometer components.

As you open this up, photograph both gauges and work on a clean table over a white towel or cloth in case you drop anything.

I just received my tach. back from repair. Before I re-install, can someone tell me the purpose and location of the o-ring (if there is one)? There was no sign of one on my tach., but it always fit a bit loose. Also, where would I be able to find an o-ring, or at least something to secure the gauge in its hole in the dash. Thanks for any help.

I had the Roadster Factory rebuild my Speedo and was very satisfied. They do Tachs also. They send them out to a shop that specializes in them. Best of Luck /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Most Smiths gauges use a square-section o-ring between the bezel of the gauge and the car's dash. It has a couple of purposes. On cars with wooden dashes it helps prevent the finish from chipping. It can also reduce potential rattles.

There are places to buy the square-section o-rings but I've never been that particular. You can buy 1/16" o-ring cord stock and Krazy-Glue together the size loop you need. Very few but the purest of the pure would notice the o-ring isn't square since it's mostly hidden between the bezel and the dash.

Doug,

Thanks for that google search info on the speedo repair. It's going right into the repair manual binder!

Hmm.. I seem to have the same problem with my speedometer.

It jumps around.

So the problem is within the gauge itself?
Sending it off to be repaired is a good option?

Before you send it out for repair check out the cable. Pulling the cable out involves some difficulty but not monumental. The cable should be lubed well and see if you can reduce the radius on any bends in the cable housing. This usually helps on my TR6.
