tachometer for XJ6

Can anyone tell me if the small round rivets on the outside of the tach housing serve any purpose? I am instaling one in my Healey BT7 and they stop the tach from fully inserting into the dash. If they are non functional I will grind off and then insert. The reason I wonder about them is that the tach works magnetically and I know on compasses there are small objects on the compass that work in conjunction with the compass to offset variation and deviation.
