Ok back from vacation. And just before I left I change the volatge regulator. I thought the one in the car was not working correctly. The guy at autozone " checked it in car' and said the generator was putting out 17 volts. I then bought a meter and when idleing the volts across the battery are a touch over 12.5 and when the idle is increased slightly it moves upt to 13.5 or so. That is the only thing that changed since I went away for a week. Now when I drive and get the revs up around 3000 - 3500 or so the tach starts to swing wildly, then settles at 0 for a few seconds, then comes back to life. Of course this happens when moving through third gear , and occasionally in 4th when I am at about 65-70 MPH. The car is running great, it is a 1970. I checked all the white wire connections under the right side of the dash and the distributor wire is firm. Any thoughts???

Switching to an internally ballasted coil fixed that problem for me when I was getting that in my Midget.

The problem may have shown up after the regulator was changed but that may be a red-herring. Before jumping into replacing stuff, disconnect, clean and reattach all the tach's electrical connections an make certain the case has a good ground connection.
