Tach Face 65 Sprite

Well I know now the 1098 runs and it is too humid here to do any body work so I decided to refurb my gauges.

My tach at some point has had a mositure treatment. It caused the red in the redline area to rust. Anyone tried to repaint this little triangle or should I leave it alone for authenticity? If I do paint it seems like a special color what would you use?

On another issue regarding fefurbing the gauges. When taking them apart from info obtained from another post I noticed a lot of black soft or hardened goo involved. The catalogs only show a rubber gasket between the glass and the beazel. Is a sealent of some sort to be used when putting these back together, or is the gasket sufficient?

I must say my gauges are beautiful!

The goo is probably the remnants of the original rubber gasket!
The gasket is all that's needed.
I've never repainted one, so I can't help you there.

Round O ring inside, square one on the dash.

And that orginal was prob, real rubber which is why it looks like goop.

I have used Testors model paints to touch up various parts of gauge faces. It will never be a perfect match but with care you'll get acceptable results.

I have a suggested alternate for the goo. As you've now learned, it's what's left of an old rubber sealing ring. I soak the bezel and glass in carb cleaner to soften that up, pick it out, then use Simichrome to polish the chrome. As a replacement for the original rubber ring, I use pieces of 0.140" screen window spline. This is like o-ring cord stock with ribbed edges and a hollow core. Just cut a strip of the stuff the right length to make a ring that goes between the chrome and the glass. You want it to push against the glass slightly when the bezel is on the gauge so the glass doesn't rattle. The 0.140" size may not work for you, several other sizes are available. Home Depot and Lowes sell the stuff and they carry different sizes from each other.

Some will probably post that they used RTV in place of the original rubber and just glued the glass in place. I really don't like that but to each his own.

Thanks Dough for the info, I have already ordered the rings from VB, hoping they are a quality replacement. My main concern was whether an additional sealant was required.

An earlier post had suggested PB to clean up the old stuff that is what I did (THAT STUFF WILL TAKE THE HAIR OFF THE DOG) /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif. My parts came apart easily so I soaked the lenses and the beasels in the PB. Very fine steel wool brought the beazels back to original.
