tach drive repair

Hello,
I have two tach drives for my bugeye. One is frozen, and one is too loose where the gear turns (needs to be re-sleeved?)I just want to send one in to be repaired at this point. I don't want a reproduction. Nisonger wants $100 plus shipping both ways - ouch. Anyone have another repair shop they can suggest?

Sounds offbeat, but try a local clock repair shop.

Kevin - If you do try MOMA in Albuquerque, Let us know what the result is. Also,from what I understand, she has no website and only checks her email once in a while, so you must call to contact her. Got this info from MOMA is good page on the MG Experience website.

I used them to rebuild my tach and speedo... no problems and turn-around was good.
Can't understand why Margaret still does not have a website.

Those drives are kinda fragile. Make sure that everything else is working smoothly, cable, tach mechanism, so it doesn't break again.

I repaired mine once, a delicate job, put it back in service, and it broke again immediately. I discovered that old grease in the tach was causing it to drag a bit, putting too much of a load on the gear. Repaired the drive, repaired the tach, and all was well. But the experience eventually led me to make an electronic tach.

I actually also wanted an original unit. I bought one from a known vendor, took it apart and relubed it. Turned fine, etc. Lasted about 60 seconds when I first started the engine. It was shot 1/2 way across the garage. The "new" one from Moss has been working for 1 1/2 years now....knock on wood!

I hate to say it but I did not have good luck with MOMA at all. I had several wonderful conversations with the lady who runs the place. All I wanted was for my speedo to be overhauled and set up for the regular 4.22 differential and regular 175/7013 tires, which I put in writing.

After about two months, and at least one call when she found my speedo had been sitting on a back shelf for weeks instead of being repaired, it finally came back set up for metric. It was literally showing I had driven 1.6 miles for every mile I went. I didn't even know this was possible!! When I asked about it the proprietress got very angry and blamed this on me--she said I must have given her incorrect instructions. We had one very confused conversation when it became clear that she and I were not even talking about the same speedometer--which is probably the reason why my speedo came back so screwed up in the first place.

When I finally got it back the second time I was billed for both repairs, something like $320.00. I paid it promptly and but billed at least two times more before everything was straightened out.

I don't like to run anybody down publicly, cause anybody can have a bad day. But use them at your own risk. Good luck.
