Synthetic oil used in placing pistons...opinions

I attended a Boy Scout meeting tonight. My son Tommy
got a little ahead of me and built and placed a couple
pistons into the block.

As lubrication, he used some synthetic oil from the garage.

I have read it is not good to run synthetic oil in your
engine during break-in.

Should I go to the trouble to remove the pistons and wipe
it all down or do I put the rest of the pistons in with the
proper oil and not worry about it?

Also, should I go to a break-in oil to use to put it together?

Thanks,

Re: Synthetic oil used in placing pistons...opinio

No need to bother, the amount of oil there is so small as to be totally irrelevant. In any case, by the time the engine starts most of it will be washed away be the gas fumes.

Re: Synthetic oil used in placing pistons...opinio

:iagree: No need to redo, it won't hurt anything. (Of course, I'm not convinced synthetic will interfere with break-in anyway ... it's just wasteful to use it for oil you're going to throw away in 500 miles IMO.)

I'm also not convinced about ZDDP and the reputed lack thereof ... but I do vouch for Valvoline Racing oil; and the "Not Street Legal" stuff still has lots of ZDDP. That's actually what I used the last time I did a full rebuild, and that engine ran like stink right up until the car lost it's brakes and the ensuing discussion with a brick wall.

2Wrench, almost forgot, my son just made tenderfoot. He's excited to work on second class. Is this pard of his Automotive merit badge?

Those are typically one sided discussions.

Not sure Colin-

God and Country, Order of the Arrow and I'm ten thumbs when it comes to
auto mechanics. Best wishes to your son. The code of honor he is learning
will carry him well in manhood.
