MGB synchronizer balls and springs- 64' MGB

Do the synchronizer balls and springs hold the sychronizer allowing it to move with the coupling and in turn appling the pressure between the cone and the baulk ring? If so, could weak springs lessen the pressure applied to the baulk ring?
 
The answer to this question is that synchronizer just floats on the cone. The springs keep the tension on the outer slide and the balls are design to act like a bearing letting the slide move freely in the machine grove that is on the inside of the outer sleeve. As a comparison your brake pads compress the brake rotor gererating heat to stop the car. The synchronizer is like your brake pads, your gear oil pulls the heat out as it slows the hub down enough so that the shift can transisition smoothly for the shift.
 
You need to check and make sure the inner teeth on the synchronizer are not worn or rounded off . A new balk ring won't fix it if thats the case. Its the friction between the brass ring and the outer cone of the gear that slows it and times it to lock into the synchronizer without grinding. Very close tolerances are necessary for it to work right. Are you sure that the thrust washers are fitted correctly? With the cover off 3rd and 2nd gear should be exactly in line with their counterparts on the lay gear. If not , find and correct. Your gearchange is made with inertia , too much travel and the synchro can be moving with too much force to stop the gear from spinning and cause grinding , if the parts are less than perfect or if you have a thrust washer issue.
