Synchro ring inspection.

Is there a way to measure the synchro rings to tell if they ar OK. I seem to remember that there should be like .080" clearance between the synchro ring and the gear when the ring is slid all the way up the bevel on the gear. Just looking at them there is no visible indication of wear (tranny dissassembled). The "dog houses" look perfect. Thanks for your help and have a good day!

I do not know what the specification is, but the internal grooves of the synchro will tell the story of use versus abuse.

Hard to describe, but the grooves should be crisp, and not rolled over.

I happen to have a side shift xmsn apart at the moment, so I'll make it a point to get some pictures and comment on the condition of the rings (whether good or bad...).

john, i agree with randys statement and would also like to add that the three legs/tangs that extend from the ring should not have rounded shoulders, it can also be dificult to see cracks in the ring itself, i put a couple of finger inside the ring in an attemp to pull them apart and look for cracks, they can be hard to find sometimes, having a new sync. in hand for comparison is very helpfull. note very rounded shoulders on the bottom ring, notice lack of grooves on the inside surface of the old rings..pict #2 bellow, i removed these from my bj7 trans. its shifting became quirky and would no longer downshift from 3rd. to 2nd. total rebuild was performed.

Anthony7777,
The synchro rings in my tranny are steel! Is this normal and or are bronze better? I have had synchro rings in my MGA that are bronze and they looked like the picture with the "dog house" rounded and worn. On my steel rings they look perfect. The internal serations feel sharp enged but they are not pointed or rolled over. They are flat on top and are, from visual inspection, about .030" wide. I took a picture but I have had no luck being able to post a picture in the forum. Thanks for your help and have a good day!

Hi John, the steel rings were implemented sometime late in the production of the center-shift trans; exact date/VIN escapes me.

Steel and brass rings are not interchangable, unless the mating gear is also changed (not so easy as it sounds, depending on ratios, etc.).

The steel rings are certainly more robust, as far as wear goes, but they still can be cracked, rendering them ineffective.
