Sway bar [anti-roll bar] question

Hi folks,
Nice day here in NC to mess about in the garage. Decided to install fresh rubber mounts (Moss 280-920) for the sway bar. Now I'm not sure where those "locators" (Moss 263-778) go. On the inside or outside of the rubber mounts?
I also assume the flat part of the locator butts up against the mount.
It might help if someone could explain the function of the locators so I remember next time I take 'em apart.
Cheers,
Adrian

I always put them on the outside.

I just looked at mine since i couldn't remember.. they're on the inside..

speaking of which, there is a gap of about an inch between the locaters and the body mounts, (polyurethane bushings on mine) .. are the locaters supposed to be up tight to the mountings or the gap SUPPOSED to be there?

I put mine up tight...they're there to keep the bar from sliding sideways....looked under my MGB's - they're on outside also.

But, wonder if it really matters so long as they do what they're supposed to?

Well, to sort of answer my own question, I took a look under my (non functioning) 1970 Midget. When it was running, years ago, the sway actually snapped in two. I took the car to a all-British shop and they put in a replacement sway bar. They positioned the locators on the inside of the mounts.

Mine must have moved around over the years. I'll put them back where they belong.

actually got a light under there and looked, mine have NOT moved in inch as i had thought.. they're still up tight against the body mounts as they should be....

Interesting...I need to look at my manuals tomorrow....can change them if they're supposed to be on the inside - I put mine on the outside because that's where MGB ones are.

We need a poll!

I usually see them on the inside. I ended up putting them on both sides (using 2 extras I had) just because I like the symetrical look and I over-do everything. Really if things are functioning correctly there shouldn't be any side movement at all. Before I replaced them they were butted up nicely, but when I went to replace them I noticed they were very loose, and any sideways movement would have displaced them easily.
