Supermoon event

On April 26th there will be a supermoon. I am hoping to get two shots - one of the moonrise (right at sunset) at Cabezon Peak (see the image in the Avater/ Banner for this group. Then, I will drive 4 hours northwest and hope to get the same supermoon setting (at sunrise) but this time set against Shiprock in north west corner of the state:

Shiprock looks like a fantastic site. The dike is awesome too. I saw an aerial shot of it leading to the rock that was mind blowing. That is a lot of driving in the wee hours of the night. I don't think I'd do it.

It is definitely a unique. I am hoping to get that moon set (at sunrise the following morning) with the moon in a very specific location relative to the rock formation. Thank goodness for Photopills!
 
Well, tomorrow is the big day. Monday April 26th, the moon rises at 7:33PM and the sun sets at 7:46PM so the moon should be just coming up above the Cabezon during "Golden Hour" which is perfect (I hope). Thenm the next morning, 3 hours north, the moon will be setting at 6:49 AM with the sun rise at 6:20 so, again, the moon should be just above the Shipwrock during golden hour. I'm keeping fingers crossed for good lighting and good weather (hope for just enough clouds to make the scene interesting but not obscuring.

Wife thinks I've lost my mind to want to go take a moonrise picture then drive 3.5 hours, sleep in teh car and take a moonset picture the next mmorning. (she may be right).

Well, both the moonrise and moonset the next morning were a bust! Overcast clouds and not a moon to be seen! (I did catch a short glimps of it this morning as I was driving to Shiprock, but by the time to got to my shooting location it had gone behind clouds and stayed there! Drat!

I knew it was going to be iffy based on forecast but was hoping I might get lucky. Oh well, Ansel Adams' Moonrise over Hernandez will get to remain as the most valuable moonrise photograph ever for a little longer :LOL:
 
His days are numbered!
In my brain, any full moon will do. It is closer to us, but depending on the lens an average moon can look as big or bigger than a super. That opens up more opportunity for a rockin' shot.
 
And keep in mind the astronomers who chased a solar eclipse around the planet a multiple times before success at proving Einstein's gravity "lensing effect"!
 
I've never understood the fascination with long exposure night photography, even though I know it's popular these days... Some people I know stay up, and drive, at all times of the night just for some photography... LOL
 
I can't explain why I enjoy it, but I do. Something about the planning the shot and then being out in nature in the wee hours is just appealing to me. It's especially gratifying when the end result resembles what my initial vision was. I can understand how it would not be everyone's cup of tea.
