MGB SUPERcharged MGB

Hey guys,
Just curious if anyone on here has or knows anyone that has supercharged the 1.8 stockie?

One of my mechanics in melbourne did it to his 60something MGBGT, did 0-100's in mid 6's!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
put out some impressive dyno figures too! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Don't have much info on it, just curious if anyone has info about performing this nutcase modification? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Cheers Guys

Jarrod

0-100 in mid 6's? I assume that's KPH? Even so that seems really fast. I've heard reports of supercharged Bs doing 0-60 MPH in a bit more time than that. We're only talking about 140HP at the wheels!

Wow! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif 0-60 in 6 seconds sounds a little hard to believe with a “stock” 1800 engine.

Perhaps your friend added some other performance enhancing goodies to compliment the Supercharger?

Cheers!

Actually that is 0 to 62.13 mph in 6 seconds so 0 to 60 would be even faster. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The supercharger makes a close to 112 hp at the wheels and its about 50% more hp and tq. The thing is that you have to have a good working engine with nothing wrong with it and the superchargers haven't been out very long so there is really no way to know how long it will actually last. and then to top it all off, It costs 3k. Now if you really want some power do a v6 swap. It's a camaro engine that has anywhere between 150hp to 200hp at the wheels stock with 165 to 215 tq stock. I'm almsot done with mine and I've spent right at aobtu 2k for everything and I'm still selling parts on eBay off the Camaro I have and extra parts from the MGB. 2/3rds the price of a S/C and almsot 1 3/4th the power and I haven't even started on reliability

A V6 is a great swap, but there is something special about an original engine even if it is modified, like changing the carburation to a supercharger. I really love the spirit of a high-powered 4-cylinder and the sound of a British engine. A 140HP B-Series engine would be enough power for me! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I just wish the Supercharger was emissions legal out here in California. If it was, I’d get one in a heartbeat. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Not many choices to me now if I want more power. Move out of state or go with an engine swap (Smog legal of course) like Adam did. The later would mean finding a donor car or engine that can or has passed smog for its original platform. But I’d much rather keep the original engine and build it up than do a swap at this time.

Something else I am waiting for is the release of Moss motors new EFI kit for the later MGBs with the single ZS carburetor. According to Moss Motor’s magazine “British Motoring” the new EFI is CARB certified so it is legal to run in California.

Hmmm? I wonder how much performance (if any?) can be tweaked out of that little goodie using a stock setup?

You will be limited to by the restrictive exhaust you have. YOu can buy a header or and use the stok intake manifold like I did and then put a cat on and you will be suprised by the difference.

Moss has made no claims about their upcoming EFI system being a performance enhancer for the later single carb’ed MGBs. Highlighting instead its improved reliability over the ZS setup when it comes to turning the key & driving.

While it would surely be limited by the same exhaust/manifold - is seems reasonable to assume that it would be vast improvement over the Zenith Stromberg Carburetor. Adding to that some minor improvements who knows?

Some possible examples that come to mind: Rebuild the 1800 Engine – say +20 over, alloy head & beefing up the valve train with bigger valves and/or a mild street cam etc. Nothing outrageous mind you as I’d already planed on a rebuild anyway. Just enough so I can re-set things when it’s time to go in for a smog test. Heck a lot can be gained by opening up the exhaust with a new larger free flow catalytic converter (low profile of course).

Who’s say but depending on the price Moss asked for its EFI – I might just invest in one.

Bret,

I'm betting we don't get a lot of HP boost. But, there will be some and it has to be more reliable than the Z-S.
I've already written the check...just waiting for Moss to release it.

If you mean the Moss s/c, I sell them for less than $3k by a ways! A year later and my first customer still has the grin factor at 100%.

[/ QUOTE ]How much cheaper?

Hi guys.
Found some more info about this model of supercharger

Check it out!

That is not the Moss Motors super charger. At least it doesn't look like it. All of the photos of the Moss Motors S/C were more "stylistic" and fit the stock engine compartment better, asthetically speaking. The one that's linked up there looks like a box with fins, and the manufacturer is claiming will develop way more HP than the Moss S/C (Moss only claims to double horse power from 50-60HP to 100-120HP)...

I sort of like the Moss one more... it's more pleasing to the eye, even if it's less power than the other. The lower power rating should mean less strain on the engine, but it is a costly upgrade....

For the same money you could rebuild the stock engine with better internals and externals and get the same power normally aspirated. Less money if you do it yourself...
