Here on the southern plains you can tell it is about to be summer time, and it's not because the livin is easy. The horny toads are coming out. The little one in the yard was out by my shed yesterday. The larger one was on my front porch this morning.

Gosh Walt, I aint seen one of them critters in years. Maybe the way he blends into the background in your first photo explains why.

They do blend in well, but they are also endangered. Pesticides kill off their primary food source (ants) and so their habit has shrunk over the past thirty years, and they are virtually non-existent in larger urban areas anymore. I'm just lucky in where I live.

When we first moved into our current house (back in 95), the kids found a Horny Toad in our yard. That was the first and last time we've seen a Horny Toad in this area since. I know they are indigenous to these parts, but aside from that one years ago, I've never seen another in the wild. (Correction - we did find a baby once while camping in Northern NM years ago)

After handling that, did you get any spiked warts?
I have a bit of a soft spot for these guys. I have a colony that lives in the back, and anytime I mow, we try to do a quick round up of the little critters just because the thought of running one over with the lawn mower isn't one I relish. Somehow, neither myself nor any of my children have ever wound up with spiked warts.
