I've decided to sell my BGT and reallocate funds and time into the Midget.
I want to her as modified as she can get without sacrificing any external looks, so things like electronic ignition are on the table. I really want to drive her to the Ozarks, and her current state right now will really prevent that.
Here's what I've got planned so far...:
Get the 5-speed in.
Send the carbs off to be rebuilt.

I'll be honest, I haven't really paid much attention to the many threads in the past regarding electronic ignition, so I don't know too much about it, but bear in mind, that I will be doing it, so it needs to be simple.

What are the thoughts then of a complete distributor, or the existing Lucas dizzy with one of those things that replaces the points?

I've always had this 'flat spot' in the upper 4k rpm range, and tinkering with the carbs and timing haven't really solved it, so I figure an overhaul in these areas may really help.

Thanks in advance chaps.

One simple thought on the dizzy is to send it off to Jeff at Advanced for a rebuild. That's what I'm doing for my new 1275 build. Keep a spare set of points in the tool bag, and good to go.

I'm sure the electronic ignitions have their benefits, but the original one seems to work decently for a street application at a pretty low cost. Take the cash saved and put it towards the 5-speed conversion and carb rebuild.

Just my $.02, and probably worth what you paid for it. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I do not have any personal experience with it, but the new "1-2-3" all-in-one 'under the cap' EI has been getting good reviews... I'll see if I can find a webpage.

I've got a Crane / Luminition (sp?) system, and it was very easy to install, worked right out of the box.

I've had very good results with MSD 6AL ignition boxes, you can trigger them with pionts or pertronics in the dizzy. They are coming out with a new 6AL-2 that is even smaller if your worried about size. As an added bonus you'll have a rev limiter too. Grassroots or Classic Motorsports had an article a while back about this and dyno numbers showed at least a 5bhp gain over stock plus easyer startup and better idle. Chris

Just perusing the Advanced dizzy website (thanks Drew), I saw he does a rebuild with a petronix installed, is this what you're referring to?
Size isn't a big deal, reliability on a long trip, is.

I'd have the dizzy rebuilt, no matter if you are going with a Pertronix or staying with the points. Worth having all the mechanical bits working properly. Me, I'm staying with the points. For my use of the car, it makes sense. Besides, gives me something else to fiddle with. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Yeah, my dizzy is in rough shape, I have frayed wires, it's just haggard.
A rebuild is a must, do I want some fancy little extras is the question?

Jeff did a great job for me, it's like night & day in my car.
Definitely get in touch with him, I went with the good old fashioned points and I'm really glad! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Jeff @ Advance Distributors is who builds my distributors, he does fine work. Jeff sent me a new new product he's making that all you A-series guys should be interested in, a timing pointer kit for the top of the timing cover, no more crawling under the car to set the timing, it's pretty using friendly and can be installed on engine already in the car.

I cob up a topside pointer for any of my own BMC cars whenever the engine is out/on a stand. Very useful mod.

Are you putting one of these on my motor, Hap? Sounds like a smart thing to do...

He will now, Drew! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Boxed up my parts.
Have a buddy that will help with the engine out and tranny replace after my midterms.
Will be a busy spring along with my hydraulic rebuild, but Ozarks is the target. Yeah.

Talked to JEff and got this info on the Timing Pointer Kit.

Jim, I have them for the 1275, and the A-series IF it has the big balancer rather than just a pulley. The set is $20 including a pointer that's zinc plated rather than black as shown, a timing tape, an alcohol swab, and complete instructions.
