Suggestions for better alternator output

Is it possible to have my current "stock" (34amp?) alternator modified to a higher output unit? With 53K miles, the brushes are probably worn and could use replacement soon, so I was thinking of having the unit overhauled/modified by a competent shop if anyone could suggest one.

I also was thinking of an auxillary cooling fan as well as a better stereo radio, so it wouldn't hurt to beef it up a bit.

Thanks,

Paul

I think you can get more out of it. THe power out of the alt is a function of the length and size (diameter) of the windings. If you have an alt that has a built in regulator, the diodes are rated for a certain max rate and may have to be changed out. Most likely you can find an alternator shop in your town and pose the question to the operator if there are not any in this news group that will help.

I haven't replaced my alternator yet, but last year I replaced the original 15ACR (34 amps) on my old 69 MGB with a rebuild from Autozone. The new one was an 18ACR rated for 43 amps. It came with test papers "proving" it ( they wouldn't lie, right?). Anyway it worked great.
That car had about 77K showing on the clock, and the unit was original. The bearings were whistling under load during night driving, otherwise it worked great! At 53K yours might still have plenty of life in it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Found problem. Alternator went completely dead yesterday. Rectifier bridge and regulator shot, brushes were 50% OK. A great local shop did a complete overhaul on a last minutes notice on a Friday afternoon for $105 parts and $45 R&R labor. They grit blasted the entire unit, cleaned all terminals and plastic and it looks brand new.
