Our back door has four panes in it in a highly damp area. The door quickly gets dirty from mold and mildew. Seeing I'm such and wonderfully bright person
rolleyes
, I decide to spray Purple Power cleaner on it and leave it, thus creating a self-cleaning window.....it didn't work.
The cleaner dried onto it and seemed to etch the glass. No matter what I did it wouldn't get any better, rub, scrub, more cleaner, 2600 psi washer w/ "0" nozzle point blank...nothing, it still looked horrible.
I had a few small similar looking streaks on the front door that seemed to be much easier, so I got out a razor blade. That worked great on the front so I tried the rear. It definitely made an improvement but it still was very noticeable. I figure I might be able to polish it out so I googled glass polishing. I found a bunch of kits but I'm not buying a kit that may not work plus HD and the like didn't have anything I could use. I figure I'll make my own "kit" outta stuff I have here. I really didn't have anything to lose 'cause I need to change the glass anyway.
The closest thing I have here to a polisher is a Ryobi vibrating sander that I never use (bought to do the teak on the Catalina I sold 5 years ago). I don't have any polish, my buddy recommends rubbing compound but I figure that's too coarse. The lightest thing I have is tooth paste so I figure I'll give that a shot but first I need a buffing pad. I glanced around and spot a piece of thin cardboard similar to what comes on the back of a legal pad that my wife left on the table. I cut that to fit (I hope she didn't need it), smear on some toothpaste and a little water, power up and go,
It worked! My glass is now about 99-99.5% with just the first pass. I'll give it another go but first I need to go buy a window squeegee. I read that was the best way to clean glass. I tried it yesterday but all I had was the new wiper blades for Kelly's car that I just bought on sale at the dollar store ( they didn't have a squeegee but had wipers on sale that we needed anyway). Being impatient as I am, I could resist the urge to try it with her wiper blades to see if it was indeed a better way. While they were a bit difficult to hold onto they worked great. Our windows have never been cleaner. It's really fast and best of all, no streaks. No wonder that's why the pros do it that way.
Successful Redneck: being able to half arse yourself outta of trouble just as quickly as you half arsed yourself into it. :hammer:
