Still slogging along with body work and paint, but again thinking of the engine / carb. I have 77 B with Z/stromburg but have decided to get more go with duals and header (no smog worries). Several questions: I see lots of used dual carb setups on Ebay (carb / manifold, etc). from your collective massive experience is it worth saving the money to buy used and have them rebuilt vs new? Also if this a wise way to go any recommended rebuild shops?

I don't think there is a quality issue, ( ie new ones are cr*ppy) so, let price be your guide. Joe Curto joecurto.com is in New York. Gerard will be along shortly to tell you if he rebuilds carb ( i can't remember) he is on the left coast.

In spite of my limited experience, I would opt for the HS4's over the HIF's..Either are "relatively " easy to rebuild (unless you are starting with real junk) , the HS4's somewhat more user friendly. I converted my previous MGB (1972) from HIF to HS4 and will do the same with the current MG (1974.5) if I can score a set of HS4's for a reasonable price. An early exhaust manifold (or header) will do away with the cat converter . Be aware the linkages between the various carbs are somewhat different so be prepared to buy some bits and pieces.

I believe Hap at Acme Speed Shop in Greenville, SC can rebuild them as well...he does a fine job on everything!

Hap rebuilt the HIFs on the 72 B and they looked and worked like new when I got them back on the engine. Nothing wrong with HIFs, put the solid butterfly in them and they just need to be pulled to do float chamber work. Other than that, their an excellent carb. Hap does excellent work! PJ
