SU heat shield question with attachment

Spent about 15 minutes sanding half the heat shield and ran out of sunlight. In your opinion, should I sandblast it,sand it better, leave it alone, or something else. It doesn't have a lot of rust on it. The orange (rust) color appears to be clay or dirt. If I paint it,what color should be used? The back of the shield had some kind of insulation on it. Does this need to be replaced? If so, what do I use?
Any suggestions welcomed
Rick

Yes, you need the insulation...go down to NAPA & tell them what its for & they'll sell it to you by the foot...pop rivet it on the heat shield..if you want to paint it - silver...but it was originally anodized.

I'm a bit of a perfectionist about these things so I would sandblast it. However I'm sure you can get it stripped to an acceptable level with a bit more elbow grease. If you can't get all the rust out, consider spraying with a rust converter before primer.

I'll sandblast it. It's still set up from the doors I've been working on. If it comes out nice and shiney should I clearcoat it or paint it or leave it?

Clear coat will burn off in spots. Use a high heat paint, (You have to bake it!), or have it powder coated. Also, Eastwood has products that can get it back close to the original color. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif PJ

Though I can't be *sure*: use caution with the insulation on it now -- asbestos, IIRC.

As Doc says, the insulation pads are asbestos, be careful with these.

I recently installed an NOS shield on my B that I bought at Carlisle a couple of years ago - still sealed in the bag. The color is silverish. The new ones from Moss are more of a yellow-cad plating. Pick your favorite and spray away. It gets a bit hot, so as others have pointed out, use a heat resistant paint.
