GT6 SU Carbs & manifold for GT6

Alright these Stromberg carbs are really getting on my nerves, I spend Hours trying to get them to run right, only to have them start running like crud again as soon as the temp drops outside, or when I look at them funny on them..

I have been reading about he hood clearance when using the TR6 manifold.

Any idea on where one can find the manifold and carbs to convert the GT6 over to SUs?

Hi Will, sorry to hear that the Strombergs are not cooperating.

Did you tune/correct the bimetal strips on the side body and replace the bypass valve diaphram?

... I feel dumb I forgot to check the bypass valves. I will pull it apart in the morning to check them

You can use your existing manifold with SU's, you just have to make an adapter to change the bolt patterns. I'm not sure if anybody sells these, but they would be fairly easy to make. You will have a hood clearence issue with the front carb, as the SU's are taller than Strombergs. I believe there is a certain SU that has a shorter dashpot, but I'm not familiar with it.
If you keep an eye on Ebay, especially Ebay U.K., you might find these carbs already on a manifold...

I picked up a pair of SU's for my MK III GT6 on Ebay.UK and was told that an adapter plate was not necessary, and that I might only need to oval the existing holes on my intake manifold. I'm months away from fitting them to the engine, so I can't speak to this directly as of yet.

Well Hymodyne, I may have to play a trip across the bridge some time to see how it all works out.

Anytime you are free. I'd love to talk with another GT6 person-
in person...

The other item that gave me issues with the strombergs on my gt6 were the gaskets around the around the throttle shaft. They were leaking air so no matter what I did I couldn't get them tuned right. Once I replaced them all was better.

You might consider converting to earlier strombergs with a manual choke.... The TR4 units (larger?) 1-3/4" are selling cheap on ebay.

Just a thought. I prefer SU's m'self.

I think Paul Tegler did this conversion on his GT6. Check the "Triumph Cars" section on teglerizer.com

I live like 2 miles from Paul. he has been a really big help in getting this thing together. I have read about his SU swap, but he hasn't been driving his GT6 much scene he finished that MG BGT but I will have to pick his brain about the SUs. But knowing Paul he may wanna stuff his EFI system there.

I bought a pair of these a few years ago, haven't done anything with them as they need a rebuild.(except sell the manifold)

Wish Paul T was my neighbor...

You may also want to contact Ted Schumaker at TSI. He was looking at similar conversions for GT6s with particular attention being paid to clearance between the SUs and the underside of the bonnet.
