SU Carbs HIF-4 # AUD 434s What are they off of ?

It never dawned on me before but I have a pair of HIF-4 SUs off of a 72 MGB parts car I bought years ago. That's nothing special, but, I just discovered that there is no listing for AUD 434s on an MG. At least I can't find one. I've tried to find out what car thier off of with no success. Any clues ?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif PJ

Thanks Scott, but I just found that out not 5 min. ago looking through Walker Carb Kits, but the 493s were on some 72s also,as on my car. I just posted the difference as the needle length is not the same in both carbs and am courious why. As I understand it, the 434s had ABD needles and the 493s had AUD needles. Must be a reason. I have a set of both carbs. PJ

In the application list for SUs ( and I'm reading that from a Haynes book on Weber carbs - go figure ) it shows the 493 as being for MGB MK II(USA) and the 434 for MGB. Both are from 1972 and the list I have shows both of them using AAU needles.

I went through the entire list, but those were the only two applications I found. You'd have thought that maybe Volvo used one of them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Well Garry, it's hard to say where the needles in the 434s came from. Over the years, it's no telling how many times these carbs were apart or who worked on them. I have no idea where the ABD needles came from or for what reason someone put them in there. They do look identical to the other needles with the exception thier 1/8 inch shorter. I thought it might be a performance thing. PJ

Yeah. Pretty difficult to say, but I'd guess it was for tuning. Either that or the last person to rebuild them either didn't have another set of needles or they mistook the ABDs for AAUs.
