T-Series SU carb needle question

1947 MG TC HS2 carbs - Does anyone out there have experience with switching ES carb needles to EU? Car runs too rich. Jets adjusted to top - still too rich. Carb rebuild will probably find "extra" washers in jets, but until then...

If the jets are flush with the "beidge" the poor thing shouldn't be able to idle correctly. I'd be looking elsewhere.

Standard SU fuel pump? Float height correct and needle & seat working? Jets properly centered and the openings not oval from needles rubbing?

The difference between the ES and EU needles doesn't change significantly until the engine revs get the needles a third of the way up.
