SU Carb Leaking fuel at top

Yesterday she ran fine. This morning she wouldn't run very well at all. Fuel is coming out of a nipple at the top of the fuel float bowl. This is on the second carb where the fuel line comes from the first card. I took the top off and cleaned everything but still no luck. If I close that nipple off, the car now wants to die. Please help.

But did you clean the needle valve and seat in the float bowl?

Methinks Jack has the right of it here. Sounds like the needle has some crud blocking it. the fuel can't fill the bowl, so the car starves for gas, while the fuel runs out over the top...

If you don't have a fuel filter installed the likely hood of this is even greater.

Thanks to both you guys for the response. The car does have a new fuel filter on it. I cleaned only the parts related to the removable top. A little spring loaded plunger that looks like it ccloses the flow when the float is high. AS SCHULTZ on Hogan's Hero's would say -"I KNOW NOTHING" about these types of carbs. For what it's worth, The bowl was full of fuelwhen I took it apart. If I stopped up the fuel leaking overflow nipple, she would die. Wouldn't that be the same as forcing more fuel into the carb and trying to choke it. Please tell me where the jet is and I'll clean it. Thanks a bunch

ocmanoo7, I am also in the Fla Panhandle, Niceville. Are you close.

The pointee end of that little spring loaded plunger (the needle valve) goes up into the seat, That is where the fuel comes in and the float opens and closes the plunger thus keeping the float bowl full but not overflowing. Does the float actually float or does it have fuel in it when you shake it. Has it been correctly set for your type carb, assume HS2.

Yep fuel out the overflow means too much fuel and stoping it with your finger would flood the carb/engine.

Panama City here. I didn't clean what would be the seat. I'll take her apart tomorrow and give it a real good look.

You can unscrew the seat and clean it with a Q tip.

If you have questions call me at 850 897 8959 If I am not here leave a msg and a # and I will call back.

Yep the tube you plugged is a vent for the float chamber, so blocking it would only pressurize the float chamber, and makes thing worse. There are many designs of needle and seat valve, I prefer the viton tipped units, they can be sourced from Joe Curto and The B Hive.

What Hap said about the viton tipped units, and what Jack said about leaky floats. If you are shopping around for a new needle and seat stay away from grosse jets.
