Well I finally decided I needed to figure out why the concrete dust (don't ask) in my basement was damp. I know that wall leaks a little, but it really haden't rained that hard. So I traced it back to the stupidol' hot water tank...

so thursday found a new tank in the back o the van (and a new hole on my wallet) and today is D-Day. I'm off to the hardware store for fittings and such. If I'm not out of the basement by noon, inflate the life raft! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
 
I narrowly avoided this episode last week.....Someone decided to squeeze between my hot water tank and the over loaded shelves of TC parts....Well the tanks has a stupid plastic tap, this person knocked the tap, cracking it and in the morning the we had a nice river through the basement....It's kinda hard to DPO a hotwater tank, but I unscrewed the plastic tap and screwed on a garden hose nosel, so far so good.
 
I did that not too long ago. It wasn’t too hard of a job, but will take two people to maneuver the tanks. I think the next time my tank goes bad we are going to invest in a tank-less water heater system. They are expensive, but you save in the long run.

I was doing a new one of those about every 5 years or so here (something about our water is hard...or soft...or something..).
I was using propane to fire it (no natural gas service at our lake house).
Anyway, I put in a new high efficiency, oil-fired boiler (to heat the entire house) and now I make my hot water in the boiler all year 'round. Seems to work well so far and a lot cheaper.
 
Put in an oil fired Monitor and water heater 5 years ago. Love it. The water heater puts out 250 gal per hour and the units have paid for themselves aready. Had only electricity before and monthly bills were $400+ in winter. Now less than a c note.
 
Well, everythings in and not leaking, and is warm. compression fittings are your friends!!.
I just gotta heave the old tank up and outta the basement. Tomorrow.

Did mine on 7/28/03... 30 gallon 'lectric. PITA! Had to lift the old one over the Elan and carry it out of the garage, then back in with the new one. Had a helper or it wouldn't have been pretty. Hope this'n goes another 20 years. But I'm gonna move it to a "better" location soon anyhoo.
 
Only by inference... the major portion of "The Pile" is kinda inna middle. Quite possible I'll find it when I've finished the new extension to the hovel and can make a proper laundry room to get that bloody "domestic machinery" outta MY garage! My tank is as old as the house(built in 86) so 20 years....Not bad, the only trouble I've had with it being that stupid tap....I have a fiberglass jacket for it to help keep it warm, and all the pipes are insulaed with foam insulation(my old neighbour had a business.....)
 
Our water heater dates back to 1989. I remember when it was installed. We had a bit of trouble with it running out when the weather was cooler, even though it's a 60 gallon tank. I bought new elements to install in it, but have yet to have been able to get the old ones out. I fiddled with the thermostats a bit, and have come nowhere near to running out of hot water all summer.

My daddy told me that until my granddaddy installed a pressure regulator on the water line, he was blowing out a water heater about every 5-7 years.

Thankfully, our house is one level. When this one dies, it won't be too much to roll it out to the street. I had to help my daddy heave one out of the basement that was about 40 years old. No picnic there.
 
Replaced our old electric one with a natural-gas unit from Sears about fifteen or so years ago, and so far so good, the thing works like a champ! I am probably jinxing myself here, aren't I? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
That sounds good Steve. this one's a Kenmore. If it lasts 15 years I'll be happy
