Stuck Intake Valves...Unstuck!

I pulled the head on The Junkpile B, all intake valves stuck open. I had started it up and let it warm up on Friday, it ran great. When I got the carbs off the intake, my suspicions were confirmed. Mass quantities of GOO. I set the intake aside. By the time I got the head off, there was some stuff that looked like asphalt crack sealer dripping out of the intake. I have a set of carbs off a 69 donor car on the JPB and they look great. I got the head off and tapped the intake valves shut. Compressed the springs and removed the keepers. I then (not too)gently tapped the valves out. Lots more GOO. Cleaned them up and cleaned out the intake ports and the valve seats. With a thin coat of oil, they went back in. They open and shut smoothly. Head set should be here tomorrow morning. I will put new seals on the valves and reassemble the head. Pistons and cylinder walls look good. No GOO on the pistons. The current goal is to have it on the road this week. With studded snow tires on the rear, it really handles our snow nicely. Oh what fun it is to ride in a 90 hp open B!

Good show Bruce! Sounds like your getting everything under control. Hope you get your wish and get it on the road soon. It ought to drive well in the snow, as long as it's not over 4 inches deep! hehe

Just keep the wind at your back and the heat on your feet!

Sounds promising for a "VROOM!!" post later this afternoon!

Goo came from crankcase vent system, likely? Musta taken YEARS for it to get that bad.

Snow is no big deal with the proper tires! First Wife learned to control the MGB in a drift, recover from oversteer and generally get comfortable with the car in a Conshohocken PA parking lot in the snow. Great sport.

Thrash it about! Have fun!

That's good news Bruce. I'm glad it wasn't anything more serious.
