TR6 Stromberg CD2 Air Cleaner Covers

I have a 73 TR6 with StrombergCD-2 1.75" Carbs. I don't really like the air filter box that surrounds the two air filters, and I really don't like the prices to buy single element replacements.

Has anyone tried to make their own air filter enclosures for each carb?? I am thinking about two 7"x1/8" aluminum disks with proper holes for bolting to the carb and holding the air filter. Seems like this approach would cost less and allow for more free air flow than the box allows?

Would appreciate input/suggestions before I begin the project.

Thanks

Joe Morgan

There are alternatives, but if you are wanting to make something yourself, the best version I've see was made from the stock air box.
Make the measurements first to fit the filter
A round center with the bolt holes was cut away from the box along with a matching rear section
The filter was sandwiched between those 2 section and mounted onto the carb.

Poolboy - not a bad idea, but had wanted to keep it in case I screw up the mod and need to reinstall air box. Will look around and see if I can find a really used one for cheap and practice on that. Generally, my second attempt turns out way better the first shot!!! Thanks for your input.

So, here is my first shot. Will cut hole in center of bottom disk, then use air box as pattern to drill other mounting/air holes so disk can be mounted to carb. Add two holes in top and bottom disk so air filter can be sandwiched by bolting top disk to bottom disk. Add TR 6 decals on top disk and clear coat.

Thoughts????
