Stream of Oil from Rockers

Country flag
Offline
As a curiosity, I removed the the valve cover to see if there might have been a problem of excessive oil shooting from the rockers as we have so often discused before. (One of the causes for oil in the rear carb which I have). Well to my suprise one was shooting 18 inches into the air! Although it seems to run well and with little valve noise, I guess I need to get the assembly re-done. I could not find the old posts regarding a specialist in Paradise, California (I think that is where he is)that many of you liked. Can anyone help me on that?
Also, what if I don't fix it now but wait until the snow falls? Can I cause damage since it is already probably worn?
Man, if it ain't one thing, its another! Will I ever have clean hands again?
Thanks for your most valued help!!!

Re: stream of oil from rocker

The company is Rocker Arm Specialists, 19841 Hirsch Court, Anderson, CA 96007 Tel. (530) 378-1075.

These guys rock /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif expect 125$ plus 2 weeks. They replace the shaft, adjusters, bushes. Mine looked new when it returned.

Hard to have too much valve noise when they are swimming in oil /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif You can probably wait until winter to fix ... as long as you have good oil pressure and you don't have a plume of smoke coming from the tail pipe (oil getting past the valve seals). At the same time it's one of the easier things to get to on the engine and is an 10 minute job to remove and an hour or two for replacing and adjusting the valves. Just be extra careful with the little tube that feeds the oil. You need to get the threads aligned and started before you tighten down the rocker assembly or otherwise it's easy to strip the threads.

Cheers,
John

Re: stream of oil from rocker

Thanks Bighly, that's the guy.
John, No smoke, good compression, and good pressure at the gauge. I'd really like to wait at least until the rains.
Do they rebuild to the point of just attaching or will I have to do the lining up of the holes and all? In other word do I send the pillars and all?
This was something the PO was to have done 7000 miles ago. Or so I was told.
Seems like I've had to rebuild everything on the car.

Re: stream of oil from rocker

Steve told me the thing on mine also had been rebuilt, obivously not. A tinge of bitterness against this our common PO. Yes send the whole mess pillars and all. John is right in saying that the little feed tube needs to be taken care. The shaft will rotate and there is a little hole, pretty self explainatory once you look it over. Another thing is to leave the lifters just where they are. If you are in immedieate need I do have a spare rocker assembly I could send out as a swap. It is in the same general shape as yours I am sure.

Re: stream of oil from rocker

I called the guy at Rocker Arm Specialist and he said no emergency as long as the presure was good. While on the phone with him I tried it again and it just pulsed out a few drops at each rocker. I guess its intermittant or only happens when the engine is real hot maybe. That just add to the confusion.
Thanks all.

One neat little dodge is to remove the supply pipe and reduce the size of hole in the bango by brazing it up and re drilling with a smaller drll bit. This is according to the Healey mechanic whom I visit in extreme times of trouble.

But that would reduce the oil to those rockers not needing the oil reduced. I´m just curious why it seems to be intermittent. Also why, if it wear, only one seems to have excess oil since they all have the same number of miles on them.

T.H. The problem is intermittant only to keep you confused and only one seems to have excess oil because the PO or Rebuilder was not Mother Nature. To Wit: If you visit a rocky beach all the rocks covered by water will be treated equally she won't miss a one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif-Keoke
