I found a strap filter wrench that could have helped me with my stuck distributor and oil filter. You can use it with a 1/2 inch ratchet to get some leverage behind it. The stap is made of nylon, and fits itself into and around odd shapes without marking the surface. This strap may be a useful addition to anyone's tool box.

The one I got is made in Tuckwilla,WA, by Performance Tool. It only cost me $6.00. Here's a picture of one:

It does have a short handle!! I doubt it would have helped with the distributer!! The filter maybe, but I reccomend them there water pump pliers!!
 
I much prefer the design of filters designed for aviation use (K&N sells oil filters of similar design). They usually have a big nut-shaped extension welded to the end so a regular socket or box-wrench will open it up.

Kind of overkill I know, at least they allow an easy way to get 'em off and torque them on.
 
That strap filter wrench works great. I just got one last weak. If you need a longer handle for a deeper reach, you just put a 1/2 inch entension into it, then your ratchet.
 
K&N also has the nut drilled so you can safety wire it on. What overkill? not if youre OCD -Josh
 
fram makes a filter with a friction surface on the opposite of the business end. you can take it off with your bare hand. plus you dont have to pay a k&n price for your filter

The K&N filter-can is pretty much identical to the Champion aircraft-engine filters (might actually be the same filter too, I don't know).
