Maybe this will help someone else some grief in the future.
I'm in the process of building a Bugeye from parts, and had a strange problem with a smoothcase transmission from a donor car. The problem was I couldn't get the transmission in neutral, and sometimes in other gears as well. There were times when it would completely lock up. The first thing I did was pull the sidecover to look at the gears, which were in excellent condition (even the syncros). After a LOT of dissassembly and head scratching I discovered that the problem was with the detent on the reverse selector shaft. If you stare at the exploded view long enough, you'll notice that there are two types of detents:ball and a rounded off rod. Apparently some knuckle head in the past had removed the plug that retains the spring/detent for the reverse selector and lost the detent (rod type). It was replaced with a ball, which didn't work, The result was the reverse gear could flop around and engage even if
the trans was in another gear!
Those detents (and there are a lot of them) are IMPORTANT!
Cheers! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
